Banned Classics...LOtR and Fantasy Genre
I find this poster so amusing because of it's ridiculousness (is that even a word?). I've certainly read these books and studied the life of their author, JRR Tolkien. It's so interesting to me that while Tolkien, a devout Catholic, considered these fairy stories, in our world we seem to have trouble leaving literature in the context of that fantasy realm.Tolkien wrote that "fairy-stories are so apt because they are consistent both within themselves and with some truths about reality. He concludes that Christianity itself follows this pattern of inner consistency and external truth." That will probably wrinkle some knickers. Anyway, as I've been examining banned books and the reasons for their challenges, I see many Sci-Fi/ Fantasy books on the list. We seem to be particularly galled by books involving magic and magical beings. If we leave these books in the fantasy world in which they exist, then how are the elements of the piece detrimental to the reader? Just a thought.
