Many of you have talked about and read banned books during this past week. I hope you continue doing that. However, awareness can't stop with just you and me. How do we get the word out to the general populace that we need to be very careful with the issue of censorship? Just a few ideas...
*Keep participating in Banned Book Week events
*Look for ways to keep this message out there virtually
*Keep reading banned books- then you have an informed opinion
*Be aware of challenges at your local school or in your community- talk with your school media specialist
*When you need an argumentative essay/ speech topic- remember book banning
*Watch websites of libraries and book stores for chatter about censorship
*Scan your local newspaper for incidents of censorship
*Speak out! Don't think just because your a teen you have no voice- use it!
*If you're a forensics team member- consider censorship as a speech topic
As with any issue, being aware is key. Remember, too, that you have a privilege as a citizen of the United States that many people across the world don't have- USE YOUR VOICE!
